Every Cloud has a Silver Lining

Caroline Laurenson // 23 May, 2023

We all go through tough times in our lives. It’s part of being human. But it’s important to remember that even the darkest clouds can have a silver lining. You might be asking yourself, how do I get through a tough time? Here’s some advice to help you onto a more positive path.

When we’re faced with a setback, it’s easy to focus on the negative. We might feel like we’re never going to get through this, or that things will never get better. But it’s important to remember that these feelings are temporary. Setbacks usually have a way of working themselves out in the fullness of time.
The truth is, setbacks are often the catalyst for growth, showing you a new path. They force us outside of our comfort zone and help us to appreciate the good things in our lives, and to become more resilient.

This is a saying that has stuck with me all of my life. My mum used to use it and while she was the worlds biggest worrier, and we didn’t have the easiest of lives when I was growing up, it made me appreciate that these challenges can make us stronger and ultimately they’ve made me who I am today, for which I am hugely grateful.

It was such a big saying in our house, that here is me age 8 (I think), dressed up as a cloud with a silver lining, in a big bag of course, which was the go to Halloween accessory in the 80s.

Here are a few tips for finding the silver lining in a tough situation:

  • Take some time to process your emotions. It’s okay to feel sad, angry, or frustrated when you’re going through a tough time. But don’t let these emotions consume you. Allow yourself to feel them, and then let them go.
  • Look for the positive. Even in the darkest of times, there is always something positive to be found. It might be something small, like a kind gesture from a stranger, or something big, like a new opportunity that arises from the setback.
  • Talk to someone you trust. Talking to a friend, family member, or therapist can help you to process your emotions and find the positives or a proactive way out of your situation.

Remember, every cloud has a silver lining, which might not be immediately visible to you. Trust that you can work through it and grow as a person because of the adversity you face. It may be the greatest blessing in disguise if you can work through your feelings in the present and make peace or find a new path through the situation.
